Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse, so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay immediately was captivated when she showed her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself via art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was in awe of the idea to film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury and go through their garbage. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
